Phelps County is located in south-central Nebraska north of Harlan County. Holdrege, population 5,500, is its largest community and county seat. It’s located about 32 miles southwest of Kearney.

Phelps County is a gateway to outdoor adventures. The Sacramento-Wilcox Wildlife Management Area southeast of Holdrege provides visitors with opportunities for exploring more than 2,300 acres of wetlands, prairie and woodlands. An interesting place to stock up on new fishing lures and get a trim is Gary’s Barber & Tackle Shop in Betrand. The Funk Waterfowl Protection Area attracts birdwatchers and endangered whooping cranes each spring.
