Auburn, population 3,000, is the heart of Nemaha County and its county seat. Founded in 1833, the city is a hub for industry, shopping and the annual Nemaha County Fair. In 1922, the fair received a surprise visit from Charles Lindbergh. As the story goes, a plane piloted by a man from nearby Humboldt landed on a fairway at the golf course with Lindbergh – who sought permission to offer fair-goers plane rides.
