The history of Hall County can be traced to the 37 German settlers who came here and set down roots in 1857. Grand Island, with a population of more than 50,000, is the largest community in Hall County. Other communities here include Cairo, Wood River, Alda and Doniphan. About 61,000 residents live in Hall County today.

The economy of Hall County is driven primarily by agriculture, and also by manufacturing and tourism. Grand Island is a large retail and employment hub for the area. The area is known worldwide for the sandhill cranes which congregate in the Platte River and surrounding meadows and farm fields each March and April.
