Gosper County is located south of Dawson County in south-central Nebraska. The county is named after former Nebraska Secretary of State John J. Gosper. Elwood, population 700, serves as its county seat and lies 25 miles south of Lexington.

The Elwood Reservoir and Johnson Lake State Recreation Area are two outdoor adventure destinations in Gosper County. Elwood Reservoir covers 1,300 acres while Johnson Lake spans 2,068 acres. Both are popular for fishing and camping.
