Furnas County is located east of Red Willow County along the state’s southern border with Kansas. Its county seat is Beaver City. Arapahoe, population 1,100, is located about 63 miles southwest of Kearney.
Named after the second governor of Nebraska, Robert W. Furnas, General Custer is reported to have camped in this county in June of 1867. Visitors can learn about the area’s pioneer history at the Furnas-Gosper Museum.
