Just a few miles outside of Fairbury, Oregon Trail pioneer wagon ruts are still visible at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. You won’t be stuck in a rut when you travel here. The 350-acre park at the site of Wild Bill Hickok’s first gunfight honors the region’s early pioneers with an interpretive center, reconstructed frontier buildings and waving prairie grasses six miles southeast of Fairbury. There are four miles of horse trails and areas for equestrian camping. Rock Creek Trail Days in June includes mule-pulled wagon rides and a buffalo stew cookout.
